L'ultime gateau chocolat passion "explosif" d'Heston! (the ultimate explodsive chocolate passion cake- it's Heston's!)

(For the English version of this post, scroll to blue italic bits...)

What does my pudding obsession make me do? Things like...insisting we take on ski holiday, all the way to France...a pain spray gun, popping candy and passion fruits? Completely logical isn't it. The point is, we had so much fun and such a treat of a pudding in the end. Let me explain.
It was the idea of @Lovefood and @Channel4, the English TV channel. Seeing how interested the audience was for Heston Blumenthal new series on demystifying molecular gastronomy, they decided to launch a competition. The game? Recreate any of Heston's dish from the series. The prize? Sit tight: A day in the kitchens of this great chef, and dinner at his restaurant too. No need to say that I was all ears. All I needed was to pick a dish- then I got really spoilt when one of the episodes focused on chocolate. Beware! Chocolate a la Heston. With ingredients and tools especially you need to plan to aquire in advance....since you wont find all of them in your corner shop! lol.

SUCRE PETILLANT (Popping candy)

FRUITS DE LA PASSION (passion fruits)

SHORTBREAD ECOSSAIS (Scottish shortbread)

La, facile- dans tous les supermarchés anglais. Pas de souci. Par contre ensuite ca s'est corsé

PISTOLET A PEINTURE ELECTRIQUE (Electric paint spray gun)

Bingo! :)
For this ingredient, no matter how much I looked through my kitchen cupboards, no way. Nothing. Ziltch. My only solution: Go hunting on eBay. Bingo :)

So I have al lthe ingredients. A good start. I now need a "motive". An occasion. Normally I live by the principle that a new pudding creates the occasion (to have people round and share it). However not this time...I really wanted to share the "theatrical" side of this recipe, especially the finish of the cake. Without missing the deadline for entering the competition of course. Our departure for ski holiday and stopover at my mum and dad on the way became the perfect occasion. In principle at least. when my hubby was busy finding small pockets of space in our Zafira to pack all the stuff you need to go skiing with kids in tow, me insisting that we must take the spray paint gun on holiday....mmmmmm....not easy! lol

Pfeeewwww :)

Anyhow, the paint gun, all the ingredients and the specific cake ring needed for this recipe went through The Channel Tunnel with us. Pfewwww :)

Dodo. A demain. Facile. Genial.
Preparing the cake itself works like a dream. Followed instructions by the letter. Cake in the freezer. Off to bed. See you tomorrow. Easy. Brilliant.(the complete recipe for this cake is HERE).

However the next day, we wake up with -1o degrees outside (I know because I went for a run. In that wether. Really). Not disheartened, I unpack my power tool! (the spray gun) and start to explain its roel to my mum whilst tempering my dark chocolate.

I could see that the idea of vaporising liquid chocolate on a cake, in her kitchen, with a spray gun that boasted on its box to be abel to cover 3m2 of surface per single paint projection was not making her laugh.

Only one solution then. Use the socket under the "tonnelle", the old outhouse next to my mum adn dad's house, now open on all 4 sides, for us to find respite from hot summer days....not the case today that's for sure.

So, padded in ski jackets and snow boots, my "assistant" (mum), the camera man (my hubby with his iPhone), the sound editor (my sister) and set out for the middle of the garden to subtly cover this ultimate cake with a light coat of chocolate droplets. I let you have a look for yourself. The person who holds the cake really, really at arms' length is my mum...very brave I must add, considering I had a chocolate spray gun in my hands, and knowing me....

I can tell you without a second of hesitation that this was a moment we will all remember for a long time. It was so much fun. And for me, gun in hand, maybe the closest I have been to feel 7 or 8 again! (considering that I have a 5 year old and a 7 year old who make me do all sorts of silly things, that's saying something).

The cake was amazing, subtle, light, delicious, and as beautiful as any cake who would have come straight from one of Lyon's best patisserie. To give it its due to the last detail, we served it in my mum's vintage plates from her great grand mother.

Do you think they liked it?

More than anything, the feeling that happened to me when I picked up the chocolate spray paint gun and turned it on....impossible to describe other than "a kid in a sweets shop" perhaps! So much fun and happiness! Thanks Heston. You are now the new culinary hero of a little corner of Beaujolais.

If my nieces stop by in not too long....there's a chocolate tree in the garden!

...And on 5th May 2012- I had so, so, soooooo much fun recreating this recipe (which incidently, won me a day in my lifetime behind the scenes at The Fat Duck- more about this HERE), that I decided to enter it in the #alphabakes May 2012 contest hosted by The More Than Occasional Baker and Caroline Makes.

Wow, this is absolutely amazing! I would never dare to recreate one of Heston's recipes... and buying a paint gun to spray the cake! It looks like you had a lot of fun and the cake has turned out perfectly, well done!

Thanks Caroline. It was a dream to make, loads of fun and as simple as Heston showed it on his TV program. The whole series is made to be achievable at home, with normal ingredients and cooking appliances, and it showed :) Next I want to do the potato doughnuts and potato jam (wanted to do it this week for doughnut week but ran out of hours in the day- story of my life!!). All great fun, never stopping learning with food :)

Wow indeed - a very impressive cake!! I've been to the Fat Duck and absolutely LOVED it!!! I'm so pleased you won as this is definitely a winning cake. I'm impressed you bought an electric spray gun as well - I've only ever seen it used on TV. Thanks for entering this to Alphabakes! PS great video - definitely looked like you had fun :)
